About.
Duval comes from a modern fantasy setting where witches, mages and other magical beings are commonplace alongside modern technology and conveniences. There are some areas of the world where magical beings are less tolerated than others and there is discourse between some mages and witches, but the world is mostly peaceful.
Duval and his older sister Delilah are from a small city called Grove and they both and their family are witches. Witches differ from mages as they practice “old” magic. Their magic is all homegrown through spells and potions so it takes longer to complete but is ultimately stronger than a mage’s magic. Mages siphon their magic through other sources and because of that are sometimes looked down upon by witches. Being the type who is always contrary and a bit pessimistic, Duval agrees with that sentiment to an extent.
So when Delilah, whom he adores and sticks to like glue, falls in love with a mage (Owen) he is extraordinarily troubled by it. Of course, he cannot get in the way of her happiness. He doesn’t approve but if he keeps his mouth shut, then he can at least stay by her side. So he does, and Owen and Delilah eventually marry.
Years down the road, something terrible happens. Something Duval could never in his wildest dreams imagine. Delilah is killed. Delilah is murdered and Owen is partly to blame. Except, in Duval’s fury and grief he makes that “partly” into “entirely.” He blames Owen for her death and thus decides to take something away from him in return.
Duval’s revenge plot is hatched. He takes the source of Owen’s magic, his emotions, and traps them in a vessel whose name is Brie. Brie has nothing to do with any of this. He was just a young man who worked with his parents on a dairy farm and was thinking about finally going to college until he was mauled by wolves in some “freak accident.” But anyway. Duval’s murder of an innocent bystander aside.
He traps those powers within Brie and basically sends Owen (and Brie) on a wild goose chase. They must do his bidding for Duval to, one by one, give Owen his powers back. All the while he’s hoping, praying, that Owen becomes attached to Brie. He wants Owen to hurt as much as he does. And if Brie doesn’t do it, then he has an ace up his sleeve.
He brought Brie back to life with the power of dark magic in combination with Owen’s magic and he’s done the same with Delilah. The entire time he’s making Owen run around, Delilah has been by his side housing the last of Owen’s magic.
So when the end comes, Owen must lose both Brie and Delilah again to regain all of his powers. (Meanwhile, Owen’s only been going along with this because he wants to be able to mourn properly. He could care less about his powers, he just wants to feel something. Anything.)
But what happens to Duval after everything is said and done? He no longer has Delilah and Owen has left him. All he's left with is a best friend who's terrified of him and just as much grief as he started with.
